On our way to our destination for that weekend, the beautiful city of Arnhem, we happened to find this abandoned farm. It is hidden between shrubs, trees and weeds, and that is probably the reason why there has been little vandalism.

The history of this farm, located on a provincial road in a remote area, cannot be traced. Never found an abandoned farm in the middle of nowhere like this one. The bride said no, cancelled the wedding and hanged herself at the frontdoor. Older posts. Here is what I visited during my two trips to Vercelli, until I finally managed to enjoy a tour of the abandoned asylum: a stunning example of industrial archaeology, a ghost town with some frescoed villas and the former pulmonology hospital, now well-known for being the setting of several ghost-stories.

The humidity that ate away the walls is now eating us as well. It enters through my nose and dampens my clothes, and I feel as if I were swimming through its endemic texture.

The plaster is crumbled but still vivid and, on these colourful walls, humidity and time have created abstract artworks, mixing the touch of abandonment with the intervention of Mother Nature, who is busy painting the walls with bright green moss and embroidering every surface with dark green ivy.

Hidden behind thick vegetation, which once must have been a beautiful garden of tree-lined boulevards, there are the twenty-one buildings comprising a huge former mental hospital. They all have the same architectural plan, long hallways linking a series of small cells, whose fading doors are now flung wide open one after the other making up a long perspective of desolation.

Rubble from ceilings and walls lies on every surface as if it were dust, or time that, with a palpable shape, has crumbled in these neglected spaces. Scattered all over the floors there are medical records written with that handwriting from the past. They have been consumed by humidity and faded by time, but they still protect a few names from the darkness of the oblivion. The silence you hear in a mental asylum is different from the silence of every other abandoned place.

The silence in the asylum still speaks volumes on what happened there. Built in the s, Vercelli mental asylum was closed in after the Basaglia Law —the one that abolished mental hospitals in Italy. Of its 21 buildings, scattered over an area of 25, sqm, only one is still in use and it hosts the office of the environmental association ARPA, while the local health authority, which officially still manages the complex, left the area during the s.

This place is well known for the massacre of a group of fascist soldiers that happened in as retaliation by partisans. More pictures from Vercelli abandoned mental asylum:.

Sorry about this! Founded inthis factory produced synthetic fibres as part of the company Montedison s. Here in Vercelli, the production was focused on cellulose diacetate and viscose.

After being abandoned in the s, the area was used not only for rave parties —as often happens with former factories- but also as a warehouse where the traditional floats for the Vercelli Carnival parade are built. The factory is located in the north-eastern area of Vercelli.

You can get to it through a hole in the surrounding fence near the roundabout on Viale Torricelli. Be aware that all the nearby factories are still in use. From the outside, the place looks more promising than it actually is: a full-blown haunted mansion, surrounded by a thick wood of tall trees and tangled bushes, well-known in the area for ghost stories and murky night-time noises. But once you are inside, the former hospital is pretty disappointing as there is almost nothing left, except a beautiful marble altar standing alone in the right wing of the complex.

The long hallways are filled with a blue-ish light coming from the smashed windows, whose unique shadows doodle sinister shapes in the broken bricks and rubble lying on the floor. The few pieces of furniture left and the surviving frames of the windows are interweaved with thick nets, which trap the skin crumbling off the walls, as if they were snakes.

But even creepier than hearing fellow presences inside the building, was a walk around the neglected garden. Founded inthis hospital dealt with diseases of the respiratory tract. It was shut down in with the aim of turning it into a nursing home for old people, and a lot of public money was set aside for this purpose.

But the company that undertook the contract for the renovation of the building cashed in the advance payment and never began the works. After accommodating refugees for a short period of time, the building was abandoned for good in From the main gate, walk towards the right corner of the surrounding wall, where you will find a stretch of fence that is very easy to open.

It comprises several buildings, stables and a tiny church, and it is evocatively located near a power station, whose cooling towers definitely contribute to the apocalyptic setting. The most stunning house is the one where Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, an Italian statesman and leading figure of Italian unification, lived. To protect the places visited by the members of urbex playground, location of these places is limited to the region where they are located.

In the environment of explorers there has been rumors for years of the existence of secret and underground military bases, now abandoned and inaccessible.

Our searches intensify until we get confirmation that these bunkers exist and someone has set foot there.

Claustrophobia, abandoned military base

The alarm clock is almost dawn. The road is still long and even winding. We leave the cars in an old concrete square near the entrance to the base. The temperature under the sun is deadly and we start to dress heavily because once inside it will be cold. Photographic equipment including LEDs and torches is added to boots, overalls, masks with inserted filters and a caving helmet.

The base extends for kilometers in and under a mountain and it is totally surrounded by darkness. No air intake, no window, no light source.

This is our playground

In a nutshell: claustrophobia. You imagine a very complicated process. Once inside, after crawling in the peat for meters, we arrive inside a tunnel of which we do not see the end. We walk. We still walk. The air seems breathable but we keep the masks that weigh down our steps.

Finally an armored door appears on our left, it is open and totally rusty. The exploration of the bunker begins. From an almost illegible map we understand that the structure is divided into blocks: A, B, C, D and E.

The geometry of the base seems simple, on the map. The first blocks do not offer us big surprises.Satisfy your passion by exploring new and incredible locations.

The Ghost Bus Tunnel is hidden away under a large Belgian city.

It could be described as a large transport museum. Trams, busses, coaches and other random vehicles all left abandoned. This visit was so much fun.

Urbex: The Twin Morgue, Belgium – May 2015

A totally new urbex experience for me. I have been to abandoned underground places before but this is a vast space and not really took photos of subjects like this. Never got to see all that was in here as we had to leave before the busy city streets took to life. As you enter the first few busses are quite new. You go round the corner and thats where the real treasures can be found.

Vintage style trams and old decaying busses lined up back to back. I am unsure as to the future of these vehicles, restoration I hope. Only time will tell. This was the second amazing vehicle graveyard I visited this year I also had the pleasure of visiting The Carvern a few weeks before.
