It's hard to conceive of a better Conan. The Bulgarian locations are outstanding. The Costuming is more convincing than the '82 version. Conan's apparel, for instance, is more faithful to REH than Arnie's fur loincloth. Better acting than the '82 version, excluding James Earl Jones, of course.

conan the barbarian temple

Brutal, thrilling action throughout with convincing swordplay unlike the contrived '82 version. Corsairs, highlighted by Conan's comrade Artus, effectively played by likable Nonso Anozie. Good serious vibe, despite the cartoony, over-the-top last act. Rose McGowan as the witchy daughter is ee-vil and creepy. Ron Perlman as Conan's father. The whole opening sequence. It's set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and concerns Conan infiltrating a perilous tower in order to steal a fabled gem from an evil sorcerer named Yara.

Due to its unique insights into the Hyborian world and atypical science fiction elements, the story is considered a classic of Conan lore and is often cited by Howard scholars as one of his best tales.

The story is set in the decadent, evil Zamorian city of Arenjun, [2] the City of Thieves. It is kept in the tower of the evil sorcerer Yara, who has long terrorized the Kingdom of Zamora, most recently having transformed a prince into a spider and crushed the young man underfoot.

When Conan interrogates the rogue for more information, the man mocks him and a fight ensues. The candle is knocked over and the tavern is plunged into darkness, but Conan's sword finds his opponent in the dark, and he escapes into the moonlit streets.

The Kothian's death saves a damsel he had planned to kidnap and sell into slavery. Without further planning, Conan ventures into Yara's garden to steal the jewel, but immediately encounters another intruder, Taurus of Nemedia, the "Prince of Thieves". The cunning Taurus, who is fat but amazingly agile, is impressed by Conan's daring and they agree to work together, with the master thief assuming a patronizing role to the inexperienced young barbarian.

After battling lions in the tower gardens, the thieves ascend Yara's spire by grappling hook and rope. On the roof, Taurus enters a treasure chamber, but is ambushed by a lurking giant spider, and killed by three bites in the neck. After a desperate battle, Conan crushes the spider with a chest of gems, then descends in search of his prize, the Heart. Lower in the tower, he discovers a strange "trans-cosmic being" with the body of a man and the oversized head of an elephant.

The creature, named Yag-kosha, is a blind and tortured prisoner of Yara. Yag-kosha reveals to Conan the pre-cataclysmic saga of his alien people, their arrival on Earth from the planet Yog, and how he taught Yara the art of magiconly to have his own apprentice betray him; but Conan's intrusion is the perfect opportunity for revenge.

Moved to pity by Yag-kosha's plea, Conan, as instructed, grabs the fabled jewel, mercifully kills the elephant-like being, extracts the heart from his corpse, and drips its blood over the Heart of the Elephant. When he sets the blood-infused relic in front of Yara in his sleeping-chamber, the gem's magic shrinks and draws the soceror into the jewel.

Inside, a revived Yag-kosha, limbs and wings restored, pursues the screaming Yara as the Heart vanishes. Obeying Yag-kosha's instructions, Conan leaves immediately and emerges empty-handed from the tower at dawn, just as it collapses behind him. He has nothing for his night's work but his sword, loin-cloth, and sandals. The Tower of the Elephant has been adapted into comic form three times: twice by Marvel and once by Dark Horse.Howard 's sword and sorcery hero Conan the Barbarian.

It was first published in paperback by Tor Books in Apriland was reprinted in February King Anaximander of Sark calls in his high priest Khumanos to talk about a drought ravaging their city. After the ritual sacrifice of many high priests, Anaximander decides that a larger offering to their god, Voltantha, is required.

He directs Khumanos to sacrifice Qjara, a more prosperous city to the north. To do this correctly, Khumanos seeks out Solon in the desert, to which he expresses doubts about the mission. Solon sees Khumanos' compassion as a weakness and shows him the ' Sword of Onothimanoswhich is just a rusted blade. Khumanos becomes emotionless and devoted to the mission.

So much so that he kills Solon because he outlived his usefulness. Conan is on the outskirts of Qjara awaiting a caravan to Shadizar. He is invited into the carvan sector of Ojara by some local children.

He settles down in a bar and meets Afriandra in disguise. She proves her precognitive ability by correctly predicting the death of a nearby patron. When Zaius comes to the bar looking for her, Conan provides a distraction by taunting him.

Zaius says he is not worth the effort.

Filming & Production

Conan begins a romance with Afrianda, which offends Zaius. The two men have a quick fistfight which Conan is winning, which Afrianda implores him to stop. Conan demands a formal duel which Zaius rejects on the basis of Conan not being a citizen. After Conan defends Qjara's gates from a nomad attack, he becomes an honorary citizen and uses the opportunity to challenge Zaius to ritual combat. Zaius accepts. Meanwhile, King Anaximander begins a diplomatic mission to Qjara.

He witnesses proof of what he thinks of as Qjara's debauchery and asks the king and queen for permission to set up a temple to Voltantha in the city. Qjara's royalty goes one better, proposing a "marriage" between the goddess Saditha and Voltantha.

The deal is done, and Khumanos begins his work. Khumanos bids slaves to mine three veins of glowing green rock from a Sarkian mountain. Extended exposure to this rock causes sores and cancer and even death. Keeping the rocks of the three veins separate, the slaves refine it into three separate statues.

These three statues are hoisted onto carts and sent by three different routes to Qjara, avoiding populated areas and going through the wastelands. Despite the heat and hard labor, Khumanos insists the carts be driven by human labor with limited breaks.

In Qjara, Conan prepares for his duel. Zaius preens and postures for the crowd, angering Conan. When the duel begins, Zaius' first stroke cuts off his own head. Not recognizing this as a ritual suicide, Conan begins ridiculing Zaius for backing away from the fight.

This angers the royalty and forces them to cast him out of the city. Don D'Ammassa calls the book a "[f]airly good adventure. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Pressman lacked capital for the endeavor, and inafter having his proposals for investments rejected by the major studios, he sold the project to Dino De Laurentiis ; his daughter Raffaella produced the film.

Milius was appointed as director and he rewrote Stone's script. The final screenplay integrated scenes from Howard's stories and from the Japanese films Seven Samurai and Kwaidan Milius eschewed optical effects, preferring to realize his ideas with mechanical constructs and optical illusions. The editing process took over a year, and several violent scenes were cut out. Upon release, the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, mainly positive for its action sequences, production design, directing, visual style, effects and Schwarzenegger's performance, but negatively received for its violent content and screenwriting.

The film earned Schwarzenegger worldwide recognition. In the years following its release, it became a cult filmand its success spawned a sequel, titled Conan the Destroyer It ultimately led to the production of a reboot of the same name. A sword is forged by a blacksmith, who then shows it to his young son, Conan, as he tells him of the "Riddle of Steel", an aphorism on the importance of the metal to their people, the Cimmerians.

One day, the Cimmerians are massacred by a band of raiders led by Thulsa Doom ; Conan's father is killed by dogs, and his sword is taken by Doom to decapitate Conan's mother, aided by Doom's entrancing gaze.

The children are taken into slavery and then chained to work a large mill, the Wheel of Pain. Conan survives into adulthood, becoming a massive, muscular man. His master eventually trains him to be a gladiator ; after winning countless fights and receiving training and education in the East, Conan is freed.

He is soon chased by wild dogs and seeks refuge in an Atlantean colonist warrior's tomb, where he retrieves an ancient sword. Conan wanders the world, encountering a prophetic witch in a hut and then befriends Subotai, a Hyrkanian thief and archer.

Following the witch's advice, Conan and Subotai go to the city of Zamora to seek out Doom. There, they meet Valeriaa female brigand. They raid the Tower of Serpents, stealing jewels and other valuables from a shrine, slaying a giant snake in the process. After escaping with their loot, the thieves celebrate, and Conan has sex with Valeria.

The city guards capture the trio and bring them to King Osric, who requests they rescue his daughter — now a zealot in Doom's cult — for a handsome reward. Subotai and Valeria refuse to take up the quest; Conan, however, motivated by his hatred for Doom and his desire for vengeance, sets off alone to the villain's Temple of Set.

Disguised as a priest, Conan infiltrates the temple, but he is discovered, captured, and tortured. It was a minute live-action stage show, similar to the theme park's other "action spectaculars," that took place in an indoor theater and was loosely based on the film Conan the Barbarian. The show was designed by Gary Goddard. The stage is decorated to resemble a ruined temple filled with treasure. Conan, a skinny young Cimmerian, descends down a rope onto the stage, hoping to plunder the temple's treasures, including the Dragon's Eye lodged inside a dragon statue, while his ally Red Sonja remains above to pick up treasure.

Conan is briefly mesmerized by the Dragon's Eye, which beckons him to remove it from its holding place, until he is interrupted by the eccentric old wizard Kallias. Kallias explains that the Dragon's Eye contains the evil wizard Taras-Mordor, who was sealed away with the combined powers of Kallias and the Sword of Crom, while Conan plunders the treasures and sends them up the rope to Red Sonja behind Kallias' back. The two become friends and Kallias invites Conan to dinner, and after they depart, Red Sonja descends the rope and is herself also mesmerized by the Dragon's Eye.

Kallias and Mordor duel, and Mordor disintegrates Kallias. Sonja yells at Conan to grab a sword to defend himself, and the youth grabs the Sword of Crom, transforming him into a musclebound barbarian. Mordor summons three powerful warriors, whom Conan and Sonja manage to defeat, but the wizard gloats and uses the power of the Dragon's Eye to raise them once more from the dead.

The henchmen are defeated once and for all when they are knocked down a pit, and Conan soon sends Taras-Mordor plumetting down this pit as well. Taras Mordor transforms into a fire-breathing dragon to ascend from the pit, and after a brief fight Conan defeats the dragon with a stab from the Sword of Crom.

The Dragon's Eye is placed back upon its altar, sealing the evil wizard away once more and bringing Kallias back to life.
